Clinton takes lead in presidential poll

Democrat Hillary Clinton appears to be pulling away from her rivals in Ohio — both Democrats and Republicans — in a Quinnipiac University Poll on the 2008 presidential race released Thursday.

Overall, the poll showed Democrats holding the upper hand against Republicans in all but one of 12 possible general election matchups, a sign that right now Ohio appears to be continuing a Democratic trend that started with major victories last year.

Extras

"Ohio is very blue these days," said Peter A. Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

In a race against Republican Rudolph Giuliani, the former New York City mayor, Clinton, a U.S. senator from New York, led 47-40 percent, compared with a 43-43 deadlock between the two in an Aug. 8 Quinnipiac poll. She also had leads over other Republicans: Arizona Sen. John McCain, 46-41 percent; former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson, 49-37 percent and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, 50-37 percent.

In the race for the Democratic nomination, Clinton led Illinois Sen. Barack Obama, 44-15 percent, while former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards had 11 percent and former Vice President Al Gore, 8 percent.

Republicans primary results were closer with Giuliani ahead with 21 percent, followed by Thompson at 15 percent, McCain at 10 percent, former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich with 9 percent and Romney at 8 percent.

In the only one of 12 general election matchups between major candidates won by a Republican, McCain led Obama, 42-41 percent, a virtual tie.

Also, the poll showed 64 percent of Ohio voters disapproved of Republican President Bush's job performance, while 32 percent approved. This was slightly better for Bush than July 12 poll results that showed 66 percent disapproval and 29 percent approval.

The poll was based on interviews with 1,430 Ohio voters conducted Aug. 28 through Monday and has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.6 percentage points overall. The survey included 497 Republicans, with a margin of error of plus or minus 4.4 percentage points and 528 Democrats, with a margin of error of plus or minus 4.3 percentage points.

Quinnipiac University is located in Hamden, Conn.

All Politicians are attempting to Kill this story, for it discloses the internal decay of our Political health. Corruption is Cancer and it will kill the United States of America. Professional Politicians are the delivery service Corruption Cancer relies upon to thrive. Help do something about it if you care at all for American people. AP is a facilitator, see the headline, It should read “Disgraced Democrats, Donor Arrested in Colorado.” As far as Hillary is concerned, she thinks we will all forgive her for taking dirty money; all she has to do is give it to charity. Question, The Clinton Foundation, She had committed a crime send her to jail, if Michael Vick serves three years for killing dogs and Nifong serves one day for ruining lives of three families then she deserves life without parole. Thank, how many lives did Mr. Hsu destroy to collect the money he donated to those, who want to escape with a wrist slap? GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (AP) - Disgraced Democratic fundraiser Norman Hsu remained in custody Friday at a Colorado hospital after his arrest days after he failed to show up for a court appearance related to a felony theft conviction. FBI agents took Hsu into custody late Thursday at St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction, Colo., said FBI spokesman Joseph Schadler. Hsu was listed in fair condition, hospital vice president Dan Prinster said in a telephone interview. He declined to provide details of Hsu’s ailment, other than to say that Hsu “was delirious (when he arrived) and had identification.” FBI agents arrived at the hospital about 9 p.m. EDT Thursday, Prinster said, adding he didn’t know how authorities learned of Hsu’s whereabouts. “All I know is I got a call,” he said. Hsu was traveling on an Amtrak train Thursday when he became ill. An ambulance was called when the train stopped in Grand Junction and he was taken to St. Mary’s. Mesa County Sheriff’s Officer Heather Benjamin said that under normal procedure, Hsu would be booked into the local jail when he is released from the hospital. Hsu had been scheduled to appear in court Wednesday to turn over his passport and ask a judge to cut in half the $2 million bail he posted last week when he turned himself in after spending 15 years on the lam from a felony theft conviction. Instead, Hsu failed to show up at the bail reduction hearing and a judge issued a new arrest warrant for him. California Attorney General spokesman Gareth Lacy said Hsu’s lawyers told prosecutors Hsu arrived by charter jet at the Oakland, Calif., airport about 5:30 a.m. Wednesday local time and then wasn’t heard from again. When it became apparent that Hsu had fled the state, California authorities sought the assistance of the FBI, whose agents arrested him Thursday night on charges of unlawful flight to avoid prosecution, Schadler said. Once he is returned to state custody, the federal charges will be dismissed, Schadler said. A string of Democratic politicians have announced plans in the past week to return or donate to charity Hsu’s election contributions. The latest was Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell, who said Thursday he plans to donate to charity nearly $40,000 in contributions. New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton has said she plans to give to charity the $23,000 in donations she received from Hsu for her presidential and senatorial campaigns and to her political action committee, HillPac.

Bill Clinton was the best president this country has ever seen. Now its time for another MAN with the right ways to run this country. GO BARACK OBAMA. YOU HAVE MY VOTE.

The only way out of the mess created by both the Democrats and Republicans is Ron Paul. He will take this country back to its constitutional roots. He will make things fair for everyone. He is the only one that will bring our troops home the day he takes office. Check out ronpaul.com for more details. The media wants you to believe that there are only a few front runners. According to the fox news debate poll Ron Paul won. Nobody ever mentioned that.

Hilary will never get my vote. Even if it means it’s the last chance for a woman president. Don’t care. She’s attached to Clinton and that’s all I need to know. For that matter, 9/11 began on his watch and he knew what was going on. I don’t know where everyone else is buying gas but it’s 3.09 in Miamisburg..and I commute 45 minutes to my job because there aren’t many in Eaton. Thanks to the exports of jobs, also on Clintons watch(NAFTA) we’ve lost jobs in the US period. Guliani for me.

I will not vote for her, but Hillary is the candidate to beat. The Clinton political machine is well oiled by dirty money and dirtier characters. People think it’s “quaint” that Bill could be the “First Gentleman” and will probably vote for her for that reason, but they don’t realize the problems that will come if Hill is elected. Can we say “Canadian healthcare”?

Cautious - the NATIONAL average unemployment rate is down.Obviously, there are going to be some cities that fall either above or below the average. Middletown was a mess even when Clinton was President. TiredofIT - You must be smoking crack if you believe that Bush caused 9-11. Only idiots think that - and I don’t know where you buy gas, but I just paid $2.79 a gallon & still had money to buy food!! Oh yeah, and Reagan won the cold war and how was the gas situation when Carter was President??

Jeb said: Unemployment is down? The economy is better? Do you live and/or work in Middletown? (1)AK Steel Lockout (2)Middletown Regional Hospital is now the Atrium Medical Center (3)Schools are a mess, and need levies to pass in November (4) City of Middletown has yet to fix the streets and needs a levy to pass in November (5)AK moved its headquarters to West Chester (6) Towne Mall looks like a ghost town and would be an excellent location for a Halloween Haunted House! Get real!!

D.Greene,

Your reference also features sources that deny any CIA - Bin Laden link. I will agree that America supported the mujahideen, and Bin Laden was a part of the mujahideen.

I do not think you are directly addressing the moronic remarks of tiredofit: “The GOP trained Bin Laudin (sp) to attack this country…” however.

By D. Greene

September 6, 2007 4:27 PM | Link to this

Jim1: The USA most certainly did support the mujahideen in Afghanistan in their battle with the Soviet Union, and there is strong support that Bin Laden was at least indirectly supported by the CIA. (check the link, read it for yourself)

Dear Tiredofit,
Do you really think that the GOP trained Bin Laden in how to recruit weak-minded zealots; convince these freaks to hijack airliners full of civilians before diving them into populated buildings? And, oh yeah, disappear into the mountains afterwards to make videos. Are you tired of conspiracy theories, Tiredofit?

Hey Jeb, go back to the hills and find some oil. Gas is 3 dollars a gallon! There was no 9-11 till Bush got in office. The GOP trained Bin Laudin (sp) to attack this country under Reagan. Look this up and shut up!

Sorry for the double post, but I was expecting my comments to show up at the “bottom” instead of the top, and then they did not, I resubmitted them.

Look at the full poll results. The media is, AS USUAL, only telling you what Hillary Clinton did. They ignore the fact that John Edwards outperformed the “Clinton brand” against Republicans.

Edwards 47 Giuliani 38

Edwards 46 McCain 38

Edwards 50 Romney 32

Edwards 50 Thompson 30

Dems are better known than Romney and Thompson.

I’m sick of this crap.

Clinton led “among Democrats.”

John Edwards led where it matters…”AGAINST REPUBLICANS.”

No Republican in that poll, when matched up against John Edwards got more than 38%. None of them. John Edwards led every Republican by higher margins than Clinton and Obama did.

Something that no one talking about this poll is mentioning, and I’m frankly sick of the slant.

Hillary Clinton is a WEAKER candidate against Republicans than John Edwards is.

John, Rudy, Mitt, Fred - in that order. I remember a time that lasted several months when the polls scored Walter Mondale ahead of Ronald Reagan. I cannot help but agree with Mark that the DDN is more interested in printing pro-Clinton news than in covering the distant 2008 election. Hopefully, senator Clinton will have the same presidential legacy as president Mondale.

Bush isn’t great but he’s better then the alternative and beats any Clinton. Things weren’t great for everyone under bill’s watch and most problems in the country were created under his supervision and Hillary’s. I shudder to think what this women would do if elected. I’m to old to rely on the government for health care…

Hey Kerri - I DO support Bush and gas ISN’T $3 a gallon and I hate to inform you, but the economy is BETTER now than it was under Clinton. Unemployment is lower AND even after a 1,000 point correction, the stock market is doing better than when Clinton was ignoring Al-Qaeda and having sexual encounters with interns. I DON’T want to go back to the way it was under Clinton. Apparently, you are looking for pity and more handouts from the government-you MUST be a Democrat!

I support Congressman Ron Paul, the only truly consistent anti-war candidate in the entire field other than perhaps Kucinich or Gravel.

As an independent, I’m sick of our nation’s adventurous foreign policy and runaway domestic spending. By the time I am old enough to retire, Social Security will be utterly bankrupt. The only person willing to talk fearlessly about all of these issues is Ron Paul.

For those who are still supporting Bush… can you drive over to my house and explain why? I’d meet you somewhere for drinks to talk it over, but with gas at $3/gallon, I can’t afford to leave home. When Clinton was in office, I could afford to buy a round for friends, wasn’t living on $1 frozen meals, and wondering how I was going to pay all my bills and still feed my child. I’m making the same money now, and am further in the hole. Curious…

Yes I agree w/Jason this country and I personally prospered more under the Clinton administration than ever. If it were possible for Bill Clinton to run again he would have my vote in a heart beat. I never voted for Bush and told ones that did so they would regret their choice. I wonder where all the Ohio voters are that voted him in when the approval pole was taken. This war was started as a campaign ploy and as a vendetta for Daddy Bush. When was the last time that Bush mentioned bin Laden?
