URBANA — Steve Coffman, a former Urbana resident, spent the later years of his life raising awareness about brain cancer, an illness which took his life earlier this month.

Now, a quilt that was created to help raise money for the cause will be donated to the foundation he started to raise money for cancer research.

John Coffman, Steve's brother, came up with the idea of the quilt while he was trying to raise $10,000 for Brown Bag for a Cure, a charity in Bellefontaine that raises money for pediatric brain tumor research.

Unlocking Brain Tumors, the organization started by Steve Coffman, matched the $10,000 donation.

The quilt, John Coffman said, was a way to entice local residents to donate to the charity. The name of each resident who donated $100 was etched onto the quilt, which will now be donated to Unlocking Brain Tumors, John Coffman said.

It took about nine months to raise the $10,000, mostly in the Urbana and Springfield area, he said. The quilt itself was created by Coffman's wife, Shelly, and includes the names of 84 donors.

"It's just a pretty good remembrance of Steven and his life and all his efforts," John Coffman said.
