Best Buy RV dealer re-opens as service center

SPRINGFIELD — Best Buy RVs Inc. announced only one week ago it would close its Springfield location. On Friday, Sept. 19, the Richmond, Ind.-based company said it has decided to stay, but with some modifications.
The company originally announced it would close its sales and service operation at 825 W. Leffel Lane and consolidate its two Richmond locations into one.
Today the Springfield location will reopen as a parts, service and storage location. All RV inventory will be moved to the company's Richmond location.
"I re-evaluated... It's basically cutting costs where we needed to so we could remain competitive," Runzer said, adding many people suggested retaining the location for parts and service.
Best Buy previously supported a staff of 12, but will now operate with a staff of eight. The sales staff will no longer be able to work in Springfield, but all were offered jobs in Richmond, said Shawn Elliott, assistant service manager and shop foreman. The staff will be increased as business grows, Runzer added.
Dave Powers, acting service and parts manager, will continue to work at the Springfield and Richmond locations.
"We are trying to keep jobs in the Springfield area," Elliott said.
Best Buy had to make the changes, Runzer said, because the "economy is tight and the RV industry has been hard-hit."
The idea of what Runzer calls a mega-service center made sense because a large client base stretches from Columbus to Dayton.
The center will be full-service, with 32 pull-through service bays, body shop and parts department. Services will include collision repair, chassis work, oil changes and wheel alignments.
The entire storage area, which can accommodate RVs and boats, Runzer said, is concrete with security lighting, a fence and a security gate with individual key-card access.
"I don't foresee bringing sales back to Springfield, but I do see the potential in a mega-service center," Runzer said.
"This will be one of the largest service centers in Ohio."
