South Vienna kicks off Corn Festival
Saturday, September 06, 2008
South Vienna, Ohio — Spectators lined the streets of South Vienna to cheer on the parade of the 32nd annual Corn Festival Saturday, Sept. 6.
The festival offers nearly everything found at the county fair — from carnival games and crafts right down to those famous pork chops.
That's fine with Jane Adams, who admits that the food is just about her favorite part of the celebration.
"Pork chops, strawberry shortcake, ice cream," she said.
Children scrambled along the pavement, hastily gathering the candies thrown to the crowd from the dozens of floats and vehicles in the parade.
The festival, intended to mark the beginning of autumn, is held the first weekend following Labor Day.
Dozens of food and craft vendors turn out annually and organizers make sure to have the carnival rides available.
Georgeann Mullins has attended the festival for 22 years in support of the community and its public servants.
"To give something back, to let them know we appreciate what they do for us," she said.
The festival continues today until 4:30 p.m.
