Board of Elections to certify ballot issues

> Champaign County issues

Springfield, Ohio — Northeastern Local School district officials are trying again to get a 1-mill permanent improvement levy passed on Nov. 4, for the fifth time.

The levy is one of 30 issues filed with the Clark County Board of Elections by the Thursday, Aug. 21 deadline.

"We're not going to give up," said Northeastern School Board President Leonard Kadel. "We have to have money to keep the facilities up. There's no ifs, ands or buts about it.

"If we quit, that's telling the public that we didn't need it in the first place," Kadel continued.

Kadel knows the district retire/rehire policy may be a reason for voters to keep rejecting the levy, but he insists the measure saves money.

"(Voters) are not hurting the board, trying to get back at us," he said. "They're hurting the kids."

Other issues filed include 13 local liquor options, a charter amendment repeal for New Carlisle and either additional or renewal levies for Cedar Cliff Local School District, Enon, Tremont City, and German, Green, Harmony, Moorefield, Pike and Springfield townships.

The issues will be certified at a Board of Elections executive board meeting Friday, Aug. 22.

Champaign County voters will decide on 21 separate issues, including a renewal levy for the Champaign County Children Services. The 1-mill renewal levy will provide money for the placement of children who are abused and neglected.

In Union Twp., voters will make a decision on a petition to decide whether to make changes to zoning regulations regarding wind turbines. The issue, placed on the ballot by a citizens group called Union Neighbors United, is asking for amended zoning regulations that would limit wind turbines to a maximum of 500 feet, and be at least 1,000 feet from a primary structure.
