German Township, Ohio — A woman struck by a vehicle while going to retrieve her mail on the opposite side of the road Monday, Aug. 4, is in serious condition at Miami Valley Hospital, medical officials said.
Teri Yarbrough, 52, of 4371 Detrick Jordan Pike, sustained broken bones in her legs and ankles from the accident, German Twp. Police Chief William Dickerson said.
Yarbrough was taken to Springfield Regional Medical Center North Fountain Campus, but was transferred soon after, spokesman Jim Senese said.
The driver, a female in her early 20s, was eastbound on Detrick Jordan Pike when her car hit Yarbrough.
The driver also was taken to Springfield Regional Medical Center, where she was treated and released, Dickerson said. The driver was upset, but not injured, he added.
German Twp. police will take the case to a prosecutor to determine if charges will be filed against the driver, Dickerson said.
"We're still trying to pull everything together," Dickerson said.
Injuries to people trying to retrieve their mail are rare, said Steve Owsten, customer service supervisor for the Springfield Post Office.
Some county mail boxes are placed on one side of the road for easier delivery, Owsten said.
"Take all the necessary safety precautions when crossing the road," Owsten said. "Look both ways to make sure there're no cars coming."
