Master Gardeners host 10th Anniversary jubilee
Tuesday, July 29, 2008
Springfield, Ohio — For a decade, the Master Gardeners of Clark County Gateway Learning Gardens has been used as a teaching tool for the masses interested in caring for healthy plants.
The Master Gardeners and Ohio State University Extension will host the 10th annual Garden Jubilee this Saturday, Aug. 2.
"We're the best-kept secret in Clark County," said Carolyn Allen, OSU Extension horticulture program assistant.
The Learning Gardens, with varied displays of blooms, flowers and even different types of grass, is free and always open to the public.
This year, several of the gardens have been revamped, including the children's garden, and some of them are completely new, Allen said.
The newly-added Ohio Early Settlers Garden features plants that colonists grew for their homes around 1850, including some flowers used to make dye for their clothes, gardener Peggie Elsnau said.
In addition to the free refreshments, tours of various gardens and a "plant doctor" dispensing advice there will also be vendors at the event.
"We want people out here to enjoy our gardens," said Rose Marie Payne, part of Master Gardeners' public relations team. "And we want to educate them on how to care for their own gardens."
