Tears brimmed on almost every eye as auctioneers sold the dairy cow of an 11-year-old who died in a tractor accident for more than $5,000.
About 70 donors paid the $5,325 bid for Austin Pitstick's animal. The group included family, friends, businesses and government officials.
Another $700 was raised by auctioning a picture of the family with the cow signed by Archie Griffin and Gordon Gee.
The money will go to a memorial fund, which will provide project scholarships for 4H and FFA members in Austin's honor, his father Matt Pitstick said.
Rita and Tom Waddle, advisers for Austin's 4H club, the Little Rascals, petitioned the fair board to allow Austin's animals to be shown and sold.
His hogs won second-, third- and fourth-place ribbons. The dairy feeder won a third-place ribbon, Matt Pitstick said.
"It's hard to get a place here in Clark County," he said. "It's so competitive."
Sara Hupp, a fellow Little Rascal and friend, showed the dairy feeder at the auction.
She described the amount donated as "unbelievable."
"It's a blessing," Matt Pitstick said.

Matt Pitstick closes his eyes as he stands next to the dairy feeder his son, Austin, raised as it's auctioned off during the Dairy Feeder Sale at the Clark County Fair Wednesday. Emotions filled the Champion Center as Austin's friend, Sara Hupp, at right, led the calf into the ring to sell for Austin, who was killed in a farming accident earlier this month.
