The Education Credit Union becomes Athena
Monday, July 14, 2008
Springfield, Ohio — The Education Credit Union has officially changed its name to Athena Credit Union.
Considering the present state of the banking industry and that Athena was the Greek goddess of wisdom and warfare, that seems to be the perfect choice.
The name change is an integral part of demonstrating the credit union's commitment to the entire Clark County community, according to Kathy Allen, manager and chief executive officer of Athena, 1427 W. First St.
Created in 1941, the credit union was originally established for employees of the Springfield City School system, but amended its charter in 2005 and opened membership to anyone who lives, works or worships in Clark County.
"As the credit union has expanded membership eligibility to all residents of Clark County, we have found it necessary to reexamine our name. The challenge has been to create a credit union name that will remain true to our education roots," she said.
The new name more aptly reflects the credit union's desire to provide not only traditional banking services, Allen said, but embodies a major philosophy of the organization — to offer education, strength and sound financial guidance for its members.
The new logo is anchored by the "four pillars of education," which are learning to know, do, be and live together.
One way Athena is trying to help the community grow and learn is through its recent radio advertising campaign. The ads feature Allen offering about a dozen money-saving tips for listeners. "These aren't just banking or savings tips," she said, "but tips on how to save money in everyday life, so people can improve their overall financial situation."
The name will not change the 67 year-old credit union's structure or staff; Athena will remain a full-service banking institution providing savings and loan products and the location, staff and management will remain unchanged.
"This is a recommitment to our members...to provide knowledge, guidance, and the right tools...in choosing the best course of action as they deal with their financial situations," Allen said.
