SPRINGFIELD — For $12 you can fill your belly and help feed the less fortunate at Empty Bowls fundraiser at Wittenberg University Thursday, April 3.

From 4 to 7 p.m., in the atrium of the Joseph C. Shouvlin Center for Lifelong Learning, 737 N. Fountain Ave., diners can choose a hand crafted ceramic bowl and fill it from a buffet line of bread, soup and salads.

Extras

The bowls, crafted by Wittenberg's Department of Arts, go home with the diners and 100 percent of the proceeds from the event goes to Second Harvest Foodbank, which stocks food kitchen and homeless shelters in Clark, Champaign and Logan counties.

Empty Bowls has raised more than $65,000 for Second Harvest since the university introduced the event in 1994. With more than 600 bowls available for the meal and 46 local business sponsors, organizers hope to raise more than $21,000, said Anna Plataniotis, event coordinator for Catholic Social Service/Second Harvest Food Bank.

The rising cost of fuel, which has translated to higher food prices, has increased both the demand for food pantries and the cost of filling them, she said.

"Last year we distributed 2.3 million pounds of food to over 130 members agencies in Clark, Champaign and Logan counties....this fundraiser is very important to us," she said.

Plataniotis and Leonardoes Villa Restaurant will donate more than 10 gallons of chicken avgolemono soup for the event; Bob Evans Restaurant will give 25 gallons of chili, and students at the Springfield-Clark Career Technology Center will chip in 12 gallons of vegetable soup.

IMANI Gospel Choir, Just Eve— a women's a cappella group —and the "Post It," student performers will provide the entertainment.

"Just show up," Plataniotis said. "It's a great family event."

Volunteers are welcomed and may call 327-6327 for more information.
