Wednesday, February 20, 2008
SPRINGFIELD — Community leaders nationwide are in the city to seek ways to end poverty.
At an ongoing five-day training hosted by Clark County, participants will explore strategies to end poverty, including an exercise on poverty simulation today Feb. 20. In poverty simulation, attendees would be required to meet the monthly budget of a family living in poverty, said Marlo Fox of Think Tank, Inc., a local group affiliated with the Clark County Circles Campaign, which joins a nationwide initiative to bring 1,000 families out of poverty.

The most recent poverty statistics released by the U.S. Census Bureau showed that 10 percent of all families in Clark County were below the poverty level in 2006. The national average is 9.8 percent.
Clark County's Circles Campaign was chosen from more than 40 other community campaigns involved with the Iowa-based Move the Mountain Leadership Center to host the training, according to a statement by Think Tank, Inc.
The county was chosen because of work done with Bridges Out of Poverty, the organization that implemented the Circles campaign locally, the release continued.
The training, which began Monday, ends on Friday, Feb. 22.
The training sessions are not open to the public. However, Fox wants residents to know that various organizations are addressing the issue of poverty in the county
