Dr. Phil uses Force on Enon couple
> Comment on this: What do you wish your loved one would get rid of?

ENON — It's one thing that Paul Grandinette wants to name his future kids Luke and Leia.
"Or Han," he said, "if we have just one."
Extras
But for wife Kim, his 6,000-piece "Star Wars" toy collection was the straw that broke the tauntaun's back.
She needed someone to perform a Jedi mind trick on her husband.
She contacted Dr. Phil.
The Enon couple will appear Wednesday on "Dr. Phil" as part of an episode called "Get Rid of It!"
The show airs at 10 a.m. on channels 7 and 10.
"I was just tired of him buying 'Star Wars' stuff," confessed Kim Grandinette, 25, a Springfield native who teaches third grade at a Beavercreek charter school.
Admittedly, when they got married in 2005, she knew what she was getting into.
"I had to talk him out of walking down the aisle to the Imperial March," she said.
But three years later, their modest ranch home now looks like a Lucasfilm storage unit.
"I had no idea it was this extensive," she said.
With almost every action figure made between 1977 and 1983 — if only he could find that super-rare blue Snaggletooth — Paul Grandinette needs more than just a closet.
Dude needs a Sarlacc pit.
"Look at it this way," reasoned Paul, a 24-year-old Enon native who now works for the village plowing roads. "At least I'm not spending money on drugs.
" 'Star Wars' never hurt anybody."
Maybe not, but Kim Grandinette e-mailed the "Dr. Phil" show six months ago.
Paul was hesitant at first.
"I heard 'Dr. Phil' and was ready for, 'You have a serious problem. If you don't change, your wife is going to divorce you,' " he explained.
The show sent a camera crew to their house last week — the same week they went to see Dr. Phil himself.
Turns out it wasn't that bad.
The show is actually light-hearted, Kim Grandinette said.
But, believe it or not, it was enough to bring about some change.
Kind of.
"I told her I'd compromise," Paul said, "and get rid of stuff I have doubles of."

So, Kim actually told me to look this up. I have previously met both of them & she always seemed a little different… not to say that Paul isn’t as well! Although he is the goofy friendly guy next door different, and she… well, let’s just say that I believe she did this for attention and to embarrass her good-hearted husband because she knew he would tolerate it. Kim, just because you have a good guy doesn’t mean you need to run all over him! Take him for granted and one day he’ll be gone

Don Ho, thank you for your comments (still without a email address). I am sure it was difficult to judge someone that you have only seen for 10 minutes on television. Nice frame of reference, buddy. The comment that an unmarried person has no frame of reference to make a comment on someone criticizing someone else is flawed and actually makes no sense. What does being married have to do with criticizing someone you don’t even know? My reference to the Bible is direct. Please look it up.

I am amazed at these comments. For a bunch of annonymous people who do not know ANYTHING in regard to the situation other than what the media wanted you to see, most seem pretty ignorant. Jabs about people you don’t know…attacks on Dr. Phil. (Licensed or not, still a Dr. - he doesn’t promote a practice, etc…just a show.) I would personally give my right arm if it would help Kim or her sister Kat. Get info BEFORE posting!

If you knew the couple at all, you would know that Kim didn’t marry Paul b/c she knew how much the collection is worth. I happen to be married, the wife and daughter of pack rats, and one of Kim’s good friends. Knowing all this (which you obviously don’t), I am able to know that Kim and Paul have a relationship where they are able to laugh at themselves and each other (an important aspect of marriage). Use the childhood saying: if you don’t have something nice to say, don’t say anything at all!

Kat are you married? If not, you have no frame of reference to make any comments. Your sis knew what she was getting into when she married him. Sounds like Kim needs counseling, not Paul. That collection may very well prove to be a nice nest egg some day. As far as planks are concerned, it must be a veiled ref to the bible, IDK. As neg comments go, I think your sis took care of all of those.

Wow, Don Ho, that is a really harsh criticism of someone that you don’t even know. I noticed that you were not brave enough to put your real e mail. Please pull the plank from your own eye before commenting on the speck in someone elses.

Personally, I think that Kim is nothing but an attention seeker. She seemed to enjoy her husband being made a laughing stock on national TV. If I had to guess, I would say that she knew the kind of $ the stuff was worth and married him hoping he would sell it and she could get half. Phil taking a jab at Paul for his weight, calling him a 40 year old virgin and the like didn’t seem lighthearted. Kim didn’t rush to Paul’s defense like a loved one should. She seemed to like it.

I’ve kept the used condoms from every girl I’ve slept with. I wrap them and label them. Obviously, I don’t keep duplicates. My wife wants me to dump them.

To whoever said Phil is a licensed therapist, he was once, but he no longer is. And what he does, Ph.D. notwithstanding, is emphatically not therapy.

I am a Collector and have been for years. Comics, Action Figures, KISS Merchandise;I was into a-lot of stuff. I was very proud of my complete collection of Jakks-Pacific WWE Action Figures. I even had all the accessories. My wife dealt with the obsession. She made a joke here or there, but did not hesitate to hunt for rare figures for B-Days. When the time came where we wanted to buy our first home, I knew what was important. I sold the collection for part of our deposit!

PEOPLE PEOPLE get a grip. Most of you probably need some type of Dr. Phil counseling in your lives. Travis - why all the anger? Don - who cares if Dr. Phil has cold soup. Bob, what did Don ever do to you? Betty, I am surprised at your comments. Katrina girl, you got it going on. Kat, wow you actually are brave to admit to being part of all of this. Great story, can’t wait to see the show. Maybe Dr. Phil can make a “town” call on Springfield real soon.

My husband also has a large Star Wars collection and he has turned our basement into his museum. I’m just glad to know I’m not alone in dealing with this. I’m not thrilled about the collection but it’s his and it makes him happy so what’s the harm? When Paul’s ready to sell off his doubles, my husband will probably be salivating at the door! Ha ha.

In case some of you didn’t notice, they said this was to be a LIGHT-HEARTED show… And, for those of you attacking Kim, apparently you didn’t bother to notice the fact that she DID compromise… didn’t ask him to get rid of EVERYTHING… just the doubles (and to me, that makes sense… why do you need 2?) Where does the comment about her trying to control Paul even make sense?

I am the sister in law of Paul. He is definitely obsessed with Star wars, and went on the show not to seek help, but to have fun and show the world his prized collection. Instead of insulting him and his hobby, why not have fun with him and rejoice in the fact that he got to show the world something that makes him happy. People would be much happier if they concentrated on the positive instead of highlighting the negative.

Paul, don’t get rid of anything without getting an estimate on it’s REAL worth. There are plenty of collectors out there willing to pay top dollar for what you have. Sounds like Kim has forgotten what made her choose you in the first place. Was it because she loved you or because she wanted to control you? Best wishes for happiness with Kim in the future. She needs to compromise also. Marriage is a partnership. Learn to GIVE and RECEIVE. Love and a happy future to you both.

I am trying to understand why anyone would want to take their personal business on television! There are plenty of counselor’s in the State of Ohio that could of done the same thing as Dr. Phil! What is the real point?

My guess is that this man’s collection is worth considerably more money than he or others even realize. We recently sold off some of our kids old Star War toys we lavished on them in late 70’s and early 80’s. After video stuff came along, they quit playing with the stuff and it had been in the basement in boxes for many years. I’ll also bet this collection is gaining value faster than most of your 401K accounts! Get it insured!!!

Well, he will help someone with a star wars feddish, but when it comes to someone loosing their child to a drunk driver and that someones cries for help to survive and Dr Phil wanted nothing to do with it, unless I had become a drug addict or my family hated me for who I became after my daughter’s death. Dr Phil is just another Jerry Springer if you ask me, from my experiences in talking with his producers.

Dr. Phil is indeed a doctor, though not a physician type. He holds a Ph.D degree in clinical psychology and presumably is licensed to be a therapist.
