Clark County reported almost 50 percent more hepatitis C cases in the first eight months of 2007 than during all of 2006.

That trend has the county's health district anxious to educate the public about the disease.

This week, Clark County Combined Health District officials provided facts they want residents to know about the liver-damaging disease.

What is hepatitis C?

It is a virus that can cause cirrhosis of the liver and liver cancer.

Why are cases up this year?

It is not known if more people are contracting the disease or if more people are being screened, said epidemiologist Kevin Aston. In 2006, the county reported 102 cases; 144 cases have been reported so far in 2007.

How is hepatitis C contracted?

Through contact with blood, said infectious control nurse Angie Ratliff. Drug users account for 60 percent of cases, but people who underwent blood transfusions or transplants before 1994 also could be at risk. Health officials began screening donated blood for hepatitis C in 1994. Health professionals also are at risk because of possible needle pricks or other unintentional contact with a patient's blood, Ratliff said.

Can hepatitis C be contracted sexually?

Yes, Aston said. About 15 percent of cases are contracted through sexual activity.

What can be done if a person tests positive for the disease?

There are several treatments. Some are taken through injection, others are taken orally. People who know they have the disease also can take measures to protect their liver, such as limiting alcohol use or taking medications.

How do I get tested?

Your family doctor is best, however, the Community Hospital Health Care Center on Pleasant Street also tests for the disease.
