The Clark County Coroner was on the scene before 11 p.m.
Thomas Lewis, brother of Oscar William Robert Lewis, 32, said he was told by witnesses that Oscar Lewis was shot by a police officer. Springfield police would not confirm the man's identity or that he was shot by the officer.
Family and friends of Lewis began to gather near the scene Sunday night while they waited to hear from police.
"It's hell waiting. It's indescribable because of all the anxiety," Oscar Lewis's mother Glenda Hanefield, of Urbana, said.
She said police told her they would get in touch with her Monday about her son's condition. Hanefield said she doesn't want to know what happened, but just wants to know if her son is dead.
Police would not comment on the incident at press time.
