A Super Bowl Workout for Couch Potatoes

SUNDAY, Feb. 6 (HealthDayNews) -- Here's a way for couch-bound sports fans to get some exercise while they watch the Super Bowl.

The Couch Potato Workout outlines six exercises you can do without taking your eyes off the big game. The workout was created by the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA).

"Super Bowl Sunday is good for the soul, but not necessarily good for the waistline," APTA member Patrice Winter said in a prepared statement.

"The U.S. Surgeon General recommends that adults get 30 minutes of daily physical activity, and Super Bowl Sunday should prove no exception," Winter said.

The Couch Potato Workout includes the Bad Call Neck Rotation, which exercises back and neck muscles. There's also the Second Half Bent-Knee Hamstring Stretch that targets the buttocks, upper thighs and calves. Other exercises include the Hail Mary Back and Arm Extensor and Touch Back Wall Squats.

Physical therapists aren't trying to infringe on Super Bowl fun, Winter said.

"We'll be watching the game, too. We'd just like to encourage fans to watch their caloric intake and to work in a bit of physical activity before, during or after the game. Exercise should not be looked upon as a chore but as an enjoyable way to stay healthy," Winter said.
