Springfield Youth Ministries brings the laughs for second year

Now that we’re past the holidays and potentially facing cold and snowy weather each day, a few laughs might be welcome.

Springfield Christian Youth Ministries has your punch line.

The second Laugh Out Loud Show will feature standup comedy from a top up-and-coming comedian, two local talents and a possible bonus guest when it returns at 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, at the Champion City Vineyard Church, 137 E. Main St.

The show’s emphasis is on clean comedy.

What started in 2017 as a modest benefit fundraiser became a surprise hit and organizers recognized the possibilities.

“I wish we’d have invited more people,” said Eryca Payne of Springfield Christian Youth Ministries. “We’re really letting the community know this year. It’s for everyone but a really good date night opportunity.”

Returning from last year will be Shawn Reynolds, who recently earned the title “Funniest Person East of the Mississippi” along with an invitation to try out for the hit series “America’s Got Talent.”

Dwight McCormick, pastor at Northridge Presbyterian Church, will also return with pulpit-based humor and last year’s emcee and local standup veteran Jack Legg will stay in the spotlight longer with his own set this time out.

If 100 tickets are sold, Faith Bosland, executive director of SCYM, will do standup as well for the second time. Last year’s comedy show was her debut and Payne said Bosland delivered with comedy based on her experiences.

Payne said the hope is to make this an annual way to get out of the chilly weather and enjoy some laughs.

Funds raised will go toward SCYM programs that serve about 600 elementary and middle school kids. The group has more than 300 volunteers and has been in Springfield for 20 years.

“A lot of these kids are in poverty situations and we give them positive adult role models and partner with churches throughout the city,” said Payne.

There will be small concessions available at the show.

Seating is limited. Tickets cost $20 in advance and are available through the SCYM website. A few tickets may be available for $22 at the door the night of the show.
