“We want to take people on a rollercoaster ride,” said Kurt Sampson, who does bass and vocal percussion. “We all went to school for music, but discovered we loved singing at a young age and show just what a voice can actually do.”
The other members include another bass and two tenors.
Since its inception in 1998, Cadence has toured internationally, recorded four albums and earned multiple Juno nominations, Canada’s equivalent of the Grammy Awards, including Best Vocal Jazz Album of the Year.
They are always on the lookout for new vocal sounds — such as when Sampson discovered he could reproduce the sounds of an electric guitar in not just one but several variations.
When people come to Cadence show they should be ready to get interactive with the group – singing, snapping and clapping. Another highlight comes from audience suggestions where the group will take on a song that could be done in a completely different genre.
“It will be like a full band,” said Sampson. “We play for ages 3-5 and for mature audiences. It allows us to have a large repertoire. And it keeps us on our toes.”
An audience member can even be part of the show, ending up helping Cadence take on one of the improvised numbers.
