Randy Travis sings on stage for first time since stroke

Garth Brooks, Alan Jackson and Brad Paisley all sang in honor of Randy Travis’ induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame Sunday in Nashville, but the best performance of the night belonged to Travis himself.

After suffering a massive stroke in 2013, Travis has been struggling to regain his singing voice. After a highly emotional speech from his wife, Mary, detailing just how close Travis came to dying after the stroke, Travis actually led the invitation-only audience in a verse of “Amazing Grace.”

It’s a song Randy and Mary Travis sing when they’re by themselves at home in Texas, but this was the very first time we’ve heard Travis sing in public since the medical battle that nearly took his life.

As you can hear, Travis doesn’t have the vocal power and control he once had, but his performance was easily the most commanding of the evening. it was an emotional moment for everyone in the room, including Garth Brooks. Travis chose Brooks to formally induct him into the Hall of Fame, and Brooks was overcome with emotion while paying tribute to his hero.

Brooks went on to say he wouldn’t have pursued a career in country music if it wasn’t for Travis' influence.

During the tribute portion of the night, Brooks sang Travis' hit “Three Wooden Crosses,” Alan Jackson performed “On the Other Hand” and Brad Paisley delivered a solo acoustic performance of “Forever and Ever, Amen.”

Charlie Daniels and producer Fred Foster were the other inductees joining Travis in the Country Music Hall of Fame’s 2016 class.
