When the big ball goes down, the time on 2016 is up. Bring on 2017.

Saturday, Dec. 31 will again see downtown New Carlisle transform into a local version of Times Square for its annual celebration at 9 p.m. Most of the activities will be at the intersection of Main and Washington Streets.

The family-friendly event is free, open to everyone and put on by the Heritage of Flight Committee. While the ball drop will highlight the evening, there’s plenty to do beforehand.

New this year are horse-drawn carriage rides up and down Main St. Mike Lowrey of the committee said the rides are free due to fund-raising efforts selling Christmas ornaments.

“We like to make this an event families can come to and not have to pay money or very little money to enjoy,” he said.

Columbus-based Rock on Ice will return with two live ice sculpting demonstrations as well as giving kids a chance to take home a souvenir — their autograph on a block of ice.

Another chilly but popular returning activity is Cold Hard Cash, where kids, and a few adults, can win $1, $5, $10 and even $20 bills encased in blocks of ice by answering trivia questions.

“You’d think we were giving out $100 bills they loved it so much,” Lowery said, laughing.

There will be food and beverages for sale including hot dogs and hot chocolate, which will help after dealing with all that ice. Some city shops will be open during the event and live music will fill the air.

A cake auction, 50/50 raffle for Heritage of Flight and Christmas ornaments will also be available.

The big finale will be when the 7.5-foot, 200-pound aluminum ball travels the 90 feet to signify the New Year.

“I say it every year: people need to get out and enjoy this free, family event,” said Lowery. “We’re a little ways from New York, but you don’t have to fight the crowds either.”

Free parking will be available on side streets and police will be on hand.
