SPRINGFIELD — It’s being called a CD-release party.
But when the music on your new CD is inspired by the poetry of Sylvia Plath, the songwriting of Elliott Smith — two people who famously offed themselves — not to mention the “emptiness of the apocalypse,” it sounds less like a P-Funk party and more like the making of a Donner party.
“I say I write music to be alone to,” Jeffrey Crace explained recently. “Sometimes, it’s hard to translate that live.”
The Springfield singer-songwriter will give it his best shot anyway when he officially unveils his melancholic second album, “Monarch,” with a free show tonight at Un Mundo Cafe.
He’s giving serious thought to adding some “extroverted” cover songs to his set.
“Otherwise,” he joked, “everyone is going to go home and kill themselves or want to sell their possessions.”
At 28, Crace is more chipper than you might assume.
A graduate of Shawnee High School and Wright State, and a longtime local drummer for hire, he also plays country with Gene Bowshier’s Stonehart band.
He also drummed for a while in the local Celtic band Homeland and a band that knocked out covers of ’80s hits.
Then he decided to go back to his roots.
“When I was 12,” Crace recalled, “I asked for a drum kit for Christmas.
“My parents gave me a guitar.”
He found writing, singing and recording his own songs to be “effortless.”
“It felt like something I was born to do,” he said.
Crace recorded “Monarch” pretty much all by himself in his basement — he plays every instrument except piano and harmonica.
The resulting album is something that perfectly captures a feeling that often can’t be put into words.
“This town,” he said, “has always made me feel lonely.”
