Chamber group of brothers to play Sanctuary Series

Five brothers with two violins, a viola, cello and double bass equal a string quartet.

Full Sound Chamber Group from Bellefontaine has performed frequently in the central Ohio area since 2010 and will travel south to Springfield to play at the next Sanctuary Series concert, 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 12, at High Street United Methodist Church.

The concert is free as part of the ongoing monthly Sanctuary Series. Free-will offerings to support the series will be accepted.

“Multiple friends and colleagues have told me about this group having heard them at other events in and around Springfield,” said Series director J. Chris Moore. “I contacted them to see if they had a date available for our Sanctuary Series this season and was delighted to learn they were available in February in time for Valentine’s Day. It’s wonderful to see this generation of young people carry forward the tradition of excellent chamber music.”

Full Sound Chamber Group’s repertoire consists mainly of baroque, classical and romantic music as well as hymns.

According to Moore, with five players an ensemble becomes a string quintet, which also opens the door to the relatively infrequently heard string quintet repertoire.

“Most major composers wrote at least one string quintet,” he said. “While many string quintets were written with another viola in mind, most of them can be easily adapted to this ensemble of two violins, viola, cello and double-bass. Additionally, they all play the piano, which also enables them to perform music for almost any combination of strings and piano.”

Moore added that when a double-bass is added to the traditional string quartet ensemble it becomes a much more versatile ensemble and gains a richer and deeper sound. The Full Sound Chamber Group is one such “improved string quartet.” The fullness of their sound comes from the depth added by the double-bass, and the wide dynamic range resulting from a literal interpretation of dynamics.

A reception and meet-and-greet session with the performers will follow the concert in the church commons.
