Kate Upton named Model of the Year for 2013

Kicking off New York Fashion Week, model and soon-to-be actress Kate Upton has been named 2013's Model of the Year.

Upton's career has been in full swing since she first appeared in Sports Illustrated in 2011. She is the first supermodel since Tyra Banks to grace the magazine's annual swimsuit issue cover twice in a row. (Via USA Today)

And her career has been non-stop this year. Sports Illustrated's Swim Daily says this is the perfect way to celebrate the "Summer of Kate." (Via WBRE)

"Upton has appeared on the cover of Vogue (something that seemed highly unlikely a year ago), joined Gisele and Kate Moss as a David Yurman model and been a pop culture magnet, frolicking with Cameron Diaz, golfing with Arnold Palmer and even been asked to the prom."

And E! agrees, writing 2013 was good to Upton and the award couldn't have gone to anyone else.

"It doesn't come easily either … She's even made the difficult transition from bikini model to high fashion starlet by gracing the covers of both American and Brazilian Vogue this year. Impressive!"

In an interview in the October centennial issue of Vanity Fair, Upton discussed overcoming the bias against American women in the fashion industry. (Via Entertainment Tonight)

"... one agency told me, 'You're too American, and everybody knows American women are lazy.' I was so offended! I've never been so offended! I was like, 'You know that you're in America, right?' And it wasn't 'American models'—it was 'American women are lazy,' period!"

Upton will accept her award at The 10th Annual Style awards, which will air for the first time on CNN. (Via The Huffington Post)

The show airs 7 p.m. ET Wednesday. Other honorees include Zac Posen, Rachel Zoe and Victor Cruz. (Via WSBT)
