Springfield brewery taps beer with local grains, expands Oktoberfest

A seasonal, limited-time beer and an additional weekend of Oktoberfest are both on tap this month at Mother Stewart’s Brewing Co.

The Springfield brewery will be releasing its Wet Hop Pale Ale — with nearly all Ohio-based ingredients — at 5 p.m. Wednesday at its tap room at 109 W. North St.

“They’re very time sensitive,” brewmaster and owner Kevin Loftis said. “You’re using hops that day, picked wet, full cone, right off the vine.”

The brewery picked up 44 pounds of hops from Hillsboro-based Old Dutch Hops and 37 pounds of hops from Hop-Acre Farms in New Carlisle, he said. All of the barley for the beer was also grown at Davidson Family Growers in New Carlisle.

“It doesn’t get more local,” Loftis said. “If you want a taste of Clark County, that’s it. You’re literally drinking Clark County in a beer.”

About 15 barrels are available and will be available for a few weeks, Loftis said. A release party will also be held on Thursday at the 571 Grill and Drafthouse at 12389 Milton Carlisle Road in New Carlisle.

Mother Stewart’s also will host two weekends of Oktoberfest this year on Sept. 22 and 23 and Sept. 29 and 30, he said. In Germany, the celebration runs three weeks, Loftis said.

“A lot of people couldn’t make it last year,” he said. “We’re giving people a chance twice to come down.”

Last year it was one of the brewery’s biggest events, Loftis said. This year, it will include authentic German music, as well as food from famed Columbus-based Schmidt’s Sausage Haus and Restaurant.
