Clopay expansion to create 200 new jobs

Clopay Building Products plans a surge in hiring next year after completion of a $30 million expansion project at its manufacturing facility in Troy, the company’s top executive said.

Clopay breaks ground Thursday on the expansion, which will create more than 200 new jobs by 2019. Construction is scheduled to begin this month and is expected to be complete by late-summer 2016.

The project includes improvements to Clopay’s existing 1 million-square-foot building at 1400 W. Market St. in Troy. It also adds 200,000 square feet of space and new manufacturing equipment.

Clopay, a wholly owned subsidiary of New York City-based Griffon Corp., manufactures residential garage doors and supplies commercial overhead sectional garage doors and coiling steel doors.

Clopay President Steve Lynch said the expansion reflects increased customer demand for its products, including Intellicore insulated garage doors, which offer improved energy efficiency.

“We’ve really invested a lot in new technology, new products, and the market is responding to it,” Lynch said.

The company also expects future sales growth from anticipated gains in new single-family home construction, he said.

Clopay employs more than 1,000 workers in Ohio, including over 900 at the Troy facility it purchased in 2006. The company also has about 100 workers between its headquarters in Mason and a production plant in Russia.

The state of Ohio and local governments have provided more than $16 million in incentives, including low cost financing, tax incentives and grants for the project.

Clopay expects to create 205 full-time positions, generating $10.5 million in additional annual payroll and retaining $34.9 million in existing payroll as a result of the project, according to state documents.

Lynch expects a “surge” in hiring next year to add about 100 workers, with the rest following by 2019. The new jobs will include production workers, managers and engineers, he said.
