Restaurant Week, revisited

The 2009 Summer Restaurant Week promotion is now history, of course, but what a history it was. Please share your Restaurant Week experiences right here by clicking on the “Post your comment” link below and telling us about your meals.

I’ll go first:

Duke’s Italian & American Restaurant

No way could I pass up the chance to eat at Duke’s, the new restaurant in West Carrollton about which I’ve written hundreds and hundreds of column inches of news stories about a lawsuit that places the eatery at its epicenter, but not a single word about actually dining there.

For Restaurant Week, Duke’s went above and beyond its competitors by offering a four-course dinner for $20.09, one more course than the norm. Each of the appetizers was a winner: Fried mushrooms were hot from the fryer, served with tomato sauce on the side rather than ranch, while chips and salsa featured house-made tortilla chips with a salsa filled with chunks of fresh tomatoes and peppers and a separate container of sour cream. Cheese garlic bread was straightforward and satisfying.

The delicious, fennel-laced, slightly spicy Italian sausage that comes as a choice with the Restaurant Week Pasta entree triggered a moment of nostalgia for restaurants past, as did the Baked Lasagne, a cheese-lover’s rendition that includes ricotta, Romano and mozzarella enveloping ground beef and sausage.

In addition to the two Italian entrees, five “American” dishes were offered as Restaurant Week options. We chose the Lemon Pepper Chicken, two properly seasoned and broiled chicken breasts served with broccoli.

Chocolate Lava Cake served warm was a slightly better dessert choice than the Strawberry Shortcake, which was a bit sweet.

The restaurant seemed a bit overwhelmed by the Restaurant Week surge, as two of our three appetizers arrived at our table out of sequence, after our salads were served. But generous portions of well-made Italian fare made Duke’s an appealing Restaurant Week choice.

Cafe Boulevard

The weather defied the forecast just long enough to make Cafe Boulevard’s back patio a fine destination.

Thoughtful and creative touches were evident from the start: The Bruschetta appetizer was served with two toppings, with a flavorful olive tapenade joining the customary tomato-basil relish. Even more impressive and satisfying were the Cheese-Stuffed Mushrooms, two large white mushrooms topped with melted boursin and bread crumbs served on a rectangular plate with a visually pleasing swirl of balsamic glaze. It was simply the best Restaurant Week appetizer of the week.

The Cafe Boulevard Caesar was robust and well-made, and the restaurant’s House Salad was enhanced by an excellent, well-balanced raspberry vinaigrette.

Entrees included a Portobello vegetarian dish that featured two medium-large mushrooms over whipped potatoes and asparagus, accented by a healthy pour of a creamy piccata sauce. The flavors melded well, and the portion was just right. The Beef Galette entree delivered some spicy heat with slices of steak, onions, mushrooms, sweet peppers and a smoky, citrusy, and appealingly zesty sauce.

Unlike most other Restaurant Week menus, Cafe Boulevard’s menu includes both salad and appetizer but not dessert. We paid extra to split the Cafe Boulevard Signature Chocolate Cake, with its multiple layers of chocolate in various forms and textures. It was rich, decadent and soul-satisfying, and it was well worth the extra $7.

Savona Restaurant & Wine Bar

Savona opened on Monday for Restaurant Week, and we snagged the last parking spot when we arrived for 6:30 p.m. reservations.

The Salad Savona, with pristine romaine and radicchio dressed with an herb vinaigrette, was a better first-course choice than the Caramelized Onion Soup with Parmesan Crostini, which was a bit thin.

Chef-owner Keith Taylor’s take on Paella was a winner, chock full of mussels, shrimp, chicken and a robustly spicy chorizo, as well as tomatoes, onions and peas. The saffron rice played an appropriately supporting role to the meats, seafood and veggies. The Grilled Mahi Mahi was cooked properly, still moist, and benefitted from the well-made red-cabbage slaw piled on top as well as the garlic mashed potatoes.

We opted for the vanilla gelato over the coffee-spiked flavor, and it was flat-out delicious — one of the best gelatos I’ve encountered.

One oddity: the butter served at the beginning of the meal, with a bread basket, is flavored with honey and garlic — only this particular garlic bulb must have been an especially potent one, since the butter was virtually aflame with essence of garlic. After the initial shock, I enjoyed the flavor blast, but I’m not sure others would share my enthusiasm.

Barleycorn’s Restaurant & Bar

Since I’d already written a story about the increasing number of casual restaurants and wine bars joining the Restaurant Week promotion, I chose one of those casual eateries for my opening-night sojourn: Barleycorn’s. Besides, it’s a safe bet that no other Restaurant Week participant in history has offered entree choices of lamb chops or snow crab legs. Ever.

The appetizers were excellent: a single Crab Cake put the focus on crab, not on filler, and was served with a shot-glass full of creamy, faintly sweet, and potently spicy Firecracker sauce. A Tomato and Red Onion Bruschetta served with lightly toasted ciabatta points tasted fresh and tangy with its splash of Balsamic-style vinegar.

The Grilled New Zealand Lamb Chops was a relatively generous portion of five chops of varying thickness served atop mashed potatoes with steamed broccoli. The rosemary-mint sauce thankfully was used judiciously. The Chicken Cordon Bleu was also a generously large baked breast stuffed with ham and Swiss Cheese, though the mixed vegetables served alongside seemed an afterthought.

Desserts were a bit of a disappointment. The blackberries and ice cream in the Blackberry Cobbler were refreshing but were served atop what tasted like raw dough. The Fried Raspberry Cheesecake stuffed cheesecake inside an eggroll wrapper which was then deep-fried and topped with cinnamon sugar. But the fried eggroll wrapper turned tough and chewy.

Overall, though, the appetizer and entree courses at Barleycorn’s made its Restaurant Week menu a fine bargain.

Went to Jay’s first. Service great, substituted ribs 4 lamb - bad choice. Appetiser and desert (choc creme brulee) not good. Then Flemmings where the resturant was obviously ready for the event. Outstanding service, entree, salad and desert. Last we went to the Chop House which was excelent but just a slight bit below Flemmings. Looking forward to repeat.

We greatly enjoyed Christopher’s restaurant. From start to finish the service and food were wonderful. The food was so good we didn’t leave a crumb. The Banana Cream Pie was to die for. We will definitely go back.

I chose the Wellington Grille to enjoy a night out with my daughters & sister. We were greatly disappointed in the service and the food. The restaurant wasn’t overly busy on Wednesday but our service was lacking. The Eggplant Parmesean was okay but the Beef Stroganoff looked like dog food. The only redeeming feature was the young waiter who came around several times filling our water glasses and serving bread.

Melting Pot Fan-I really am glad that someone likes to eat there. Last thing I want to see is another restaurant go under. I did know it was fondue, but like I said, I thought it would be for the appetizer and dessert for fun. Unfortunatley, I do like the finer things and have extensive culinary experience. That is exactly why cooking filet mignon and lobster in the same disgusting broth is a travesty to fine food! If you like it, great-but me and my fine palate will never destroy expensive lobster & mignon like that again!

To Deborah and Melting Pot - Yuk: apparently, you don’t like the finer things that actually take some effort. Did you not know that it was a fondue restaurant before going?? Of course you cook your own food!! Also, if you cook at home, you should know how long it takes to cook meat, chicken, and fish. Plus, I know the waitstaff explains that. The portions may have been smaller than usual, but obviously you don’t have any fine culinary tastes!!

I have to agree with Deborah-Melting Pot is way overpriced and disgusting. Our waitress and the ambience was great, but the entire concept is just gross! I will never go back & pay their menu prices to cook my own raw food in disgusting broth. For the $100+ bill, I will go to Carver’s and have them cook my steak FOR me! I agree with Deborah on the likelihood of eating under-cooked meat. The lights are so dim and there is no timer. I either ate undercooked meat or overcooked meat everytime. If they went to a normal dining experience, (having cooked entrees brought to you) and left the fondue to just cheese & chocolate, it would make more sense. A horrible way to waste your money in this economy. We will not be back & do not recommend to anyone!

We went to Jay’s on Thursday. Very busy. Server was excellent. We both had the salmon. Drinks are costly- not the best martini around. Overall, it was a good experience. Would go again RW or not!

Went to Melting Pot after waiting all week for a night when I could get reservations. What an over priced, over hyped place pompous atmosphere. The server was silly, spoke so fast you could barely understand him. He couldnt wait to sweep away our dishes before we had finished eating, though no one was waiting for the table. The first course he made with so much wine it destroyed the texture of the fondue, totally overpowered the taste of the cheese, which was unremarkable, and left me feeling whoosey. The ceasar salad dressing was soemwhat bitter and not appealing. The vegetable broth in which the meats and vegetables were to be cooked, was loaded with some sort of pepper. This was not mentioned and one usually doesnt expect vegetable broth to taste like hot peppers. I was surprised that we were to cook our own food, each for a different length of time when there was no timer available. Eating under cooked meat is dangerous, so why this oversight continues, must be because no one has gotten sick before leaving the building! If not on that, then the server’s rather snide remark that asking for lemon and sugar must be because we wanted to make free lemonade. the entree was really tasteless and the portions for every course, rather tiny. The best part was the plain ole milk chocolate dessert, which cost us extra. I left feeling hungry, and overcharged. I will be inviting friends over to my house for fondue next time.

Went to L’Auberge & was so disappointed. Have been going there off & on since Deiter ran the show. The bisque was luke warm & the pasta had to be sent back to be heated! The sauce was overly heavy & many of the strands of linguine had been cooked together. The menu posted ice cream with a sauce. Asked for & did get the original offerings. But on a much brighter note: Sweeney’s last week was superb. The ravioli, chowder & hazelnut encrusted shrimp are all worth going back for more.

On Friday I went to Coco’s. I had the house made crostinis, the house salad, the Asian Beef Tenderloin, and the butterscotch mousse for desert because they ran out of the chocolate, etc. The meal was excellent and so was the service.

I enjoyed another terrific meal at Carver’s on Thursday night. They were all booked up in the restaurant,so I went to the Bistro. There was one last table which had not been cleaned,so I said if I sit there they will come and they came and cleaned it for me. I started with the 2005 Orphelin Meritage from Columbia Valley. It was excellent. I tried the spinach salad with apples, glazed almonds, and dried cranberries. It was pretty good. I had the filet for my main entree. They butterflied it and it was so tender a baby could have gummed it. I tried the fresh strawberry tart and it was very sweet and excellent.

Took advantage of the extended RW at L’Auberge last night. Good crowd for a Monday night. Both of the soups (lobster bisque and potato/leek) were superb. The veal was also excellent. I was a little disappointed in the seafood pasta; very heavy and lacked finesse of other dishes. Service was good and accommodating even though the kitchen was runnig a little slow. Nice conversation with friends and an enjoyable way to end the RW festivities.

This is a follow-up to an earlier posting and will round out our thoughts on RW Summer 2009. We completed the week with Pacchia on Thursday and Savona on Friday. My husband and I enjoyed the walleye and good service at Pacchia. The lower price of our drinks during happy hour was helpful to the wallet. We both ordered paella at Savona on Friday. Apparently they are still using the same potent garlic bulb in the butter that Mark mentioned. In my book, extremely strong garlic and honey do not compliment good bread. Otherwise, the service and food was quite good. Summary: My husband’s favorite was Sweeny’s and mine was McCormick and Schmick - with all four of the other restaurants tied for second. It is always a special week!

We went out Mon-Fri. Started Monday at Savonna — had really weak onion soup, overdone mahi mahi and gelati filled with ice crystals like it had been in the freezer too long. Won’t ever go back. Tuesday was Chappy’s — great ribs and local veggies all cooked to perfection; TX sheetcake was just OK. Weds was a trip to the Buckhorn Tavern - our first trip there and not the last! Strip steak had a sauce that was too heavy, but easily moved to the side; great meal and service. Thursday was El Meson (which upfront I tell you we LOVE) yet another hit out of the park for the Castro family! Friday was Carvers — service was BAD, entrees were exceptionally good, but the strawberry tart dessert was awful (I stole a bit of my husbands creme brulee and it was really good).

Went to Barbie’s Bistro in Kettering last night (31 July), worst dining experience we’ve had in years. Waited over an hour for our meals (forty-plus minutes for simple side salad alone), had to ask for cutlery, offer to refill drinks came only after meal was complete. Wife’s “Seafood Skewery” had but a half dozen shrimp/scallops, had to cut my luke warm steak with butter knife because waitress never did bring steak knife she promised. Should have followed the lead of the two couples who walked out in disgust.

went to the Hickory Wednesday and thought it was awful.ordered ribs which were cafeteria quality and preparation was shoddy and dry.had a bleu cheese salad and it was nasty..tasted like a combo of cottage cheese and coddled cream, plus it was a $1.50 bump (which the server neglected to mention).the baked potato was served with ersatz butter and an sample cup of low quality sour cream..the place is stuck in the past and could use considerable upgrading..have had better experiences at Mc Cormick & Schmick and Jay’s which are , by comparison, in a different time-space continuum. caveat emptor

We started on Tuesday at Sweeneys. I had the salmon & it was great. My husband had the trout & really loved it. It was great to see them so busy. We went to Savona on Wednesday, the paella was amazing & my husband loved the mahi. Went to Carvers last night, I couldn’t get over the amount of people there. I had the NY strip, just a little peppery but very good. My husband had the prime rib, didn’t even need a knife. Service was fast & friendly, by far our favorite. Going to Rue Dumaine tonight.

Visited Duke’s for the first time (never made it there during its previous incarnation). Good solid fare. We stuck with the Italian side of the menu and were not disappointed. Good garlicy bite on the cheese garlic bread. The fried mushrooms were enough to share with 4. Excellent Italian sausage with the shells. No scimping on the portion size for RW. Plenty of lasagna and pasta for lunch today. Server was very attentive and appreciative that we had come “all the way” from Riverside for dinner. Simple wine list with a few interesting selections, not the usual grocery store list you might expect.

Meadowlark was okay. Portions seemed a little small. The shrimp appetizer was excellent, with a nice balance of spicy shrimp and sweet watermelon. The steak entree was bland and fatty. The peach dessert was good, but would have worked better with more blue cheese to balance out the gelato. I should have picked a different spot.

I went to the Bahn Mai Thai Restaurant in Centerville last night. I ordered the Garlic Sticks as an appetizer, Tamarind Beef as the main course and the ice cream with the spring rolls. The food was not real hot in temperature and taste like it normally is, but everything was good. Ray and Patty walked in and asked me to join them. Patty ordered exactly what I did, but Ray ordered two of the curries. They both got the desserts with the fried wontons. I ended up with enough food for two more meals.

Sunday: Each year we start RW at Carver’s. Enjoyed our meals as always, but our all-time favorite server in Dayton has completed her schooling and is working in the legal profession and her good backup at Carver’s has been deployed. Thus, for the first time, service at Carver’s was not up to par. Realize it was extremely busy but this has never been a factor in the past. Monday: Had a wonderful meal at McCormick and Schmick! My husband and I both enjoyed Parmesan Tilapia (served piping hot and crispy), Caesar salad (dressing is delish), and chocolate cake. Portions were generous and the entre’ included mashed potatoes plus a nice serving of green beans. The service and friendly atmosphere matched the food. Tuesday: Had a delicious meal at Flemings: We both enjoyed filet mignon and the service was, as usual, excellent in spite of the crowd. Wednesday: The seafood menu at Sweeny’s was very creative and presented some difficult choices. The steamed shrimp and mussels in a white wine broth served over orzo was a lovely appetizer and the portion was generous. Sweeny’s is continuing RW a little longer but it would be a good idea to check what is still available and definitely make reservations. Thursday it is Pacchia and Friday we finish at Savona. This year RW is a beef and seafood week for us, which is just fine! However, it sure was difficult to narrow down our restaurant choices.

Visited C’est Tout last night. Good crowd, definitely recommend reservations. They had a lot of walk ins waiting at the bar. The tomato/corn soup was superb, the sweetness of the fresh corn really popped against the roasted tomatoes. The chicken scallopine was very flavorful, moist and plentiful. The blackend tilapia was good but not spectacular. Service was attentive and personable even though it was obvious the staff was getting slammed. Very nice Sancerre complemented both meals. Planning to try Duke’s tonight now that all the lawyers are gone.

My husband and I ate at Rue Dumaine last night. My meal was great but my husband was disappointed in his. I had the mushroom crepe, hanger steak and pear clafouti. His salad was dressed with too much oil and the trout cake entree was too small. He did enjoy the clafouti. The service was excellent. An odd situation was how they seated us. Every time the server came to wait on the corner table near us, my husband had to move his chair. Unfortunately, we will not be rushing back here.

Ate at Coco’s last night and it was fantastic. From start to finish it was absolutely amazing and the service (as always) was exceptional. Hit the Wine Gallery last night before the Dragon’s game. The wild mushroom bruschetta was superb with a rich portobella flavor and a nice kick of garlic. I had the prosciutto pizza and my wife had the spinach/mushroom pizza both very flavorful and tons of cheese. In addition to RW menu, Tuesday and Thursday they have $2 wines and beers. Full size glasses, not small tastings, we had a very nice Rose from Tuscany and a Lirac from the Rhone -both nice matches to the pizzas. Off to C’est Tout to night.

We ate at Melting Pot tonight, and it was really good! This was our first time, and we decided to try it during restaurant week because their usual prices are a little high for us. We were so glad we did! The cheese fondue appetizer, (we chose spinach artichoke), was the star and there was so much, we couldn’t even finish it all. The meal also included salad and the meat course. The dipping sauces for the meats were fabulous, as were the blackberry margarita’s, (not part of RW menu, but SO worth trying!). We were too full to try dessert, but we will definately go back again!

The Melting Pot was awesome tonight! The fondue format is so cool! They had many diners tonight, but the elegant layout of the restaurant doesn’t make it feel “busy”. Hi There My hubby and I decided to finally visit the Greene, while there we stopped in at The Pub(which is British/Scotish tastes) for early supper. He had the fish and chips and I had the beef stew and both were very tasty, I opted to have the small mixed salad for an extra $1.00, we both enjoyed our meals and you get large potions so i had a doggie bag to take with me, Hubby tried one of the famous beers only available at the Pub, very tasty, We would recommend this restaurant(but not for someone with tight purse strings). Enjoy

We went to Flemings on Sunday. None in my party of 6 had ever been there before. We thoroughly enjoyed it. A few of us had the filet mignon and the others had the chicken. Everyone enjoyed there meal. The only choice for dessert was either a vanilla or chocolate creme brulee. Wished there was another choice, but the vanilla was very tasty. We will definitely go back for the regular meal but only for a special occasion as the regular menu seemed a bit pricey.

Went to Carver’s last night. Salad and bread were great. Steak was an inexpensive cut that you might find at Applebee’s, not a steakhouse steak at all. Then when it came time for dessert, the dessert shown on the internet was not available. Would not go back again if this is the steak they serve.
