What to do with Brandon Saine?

MASSILLON — After it became obvious that Brandon Saine is the best prep football player in Ohio, the question turned to: What happens to him next?

The Piqua High School running back ran wild in Piqua’s Division II state championship victory on Friday. He closed his high school career with the title trophy and Mr. Football award.

But that doesn’t mean he’ll play running back when he gets to Ohio State next season. The Buckeyes are just fine at the position, thanks, with Antonio Pittman expected to come back for his senior year (which he should), Chris Wells returning as a sophomore and Maurice Wells adding speed as a junior.

So, you could redshirt Saine. But then you wouldn’t have Ohio’s record-holder in the 100 meters (10.38 seconds) in your lineup. We saw his speed on his first touchdown run Friday night (he had three overall), when he got to the right sideline and had two Pickerington Central defenders close to him. You could almost see him turn to another gear and run away from them.

What about putting him in the slot? He can catch passes, and with his speed he’s very useful out in open spaces.

Or, some in the press box suggested moving him to defense. He has good size (6 feet 1, 218 pounds), and very few would be able to get by him as a defensive back. Or, maybe beef him up and make him a linebacker.

But, in the end, all agreed on one thing:

This guy is so talented, you have to find a way for him to play somewhere.
