Defending state champs out of D-III girls tournament

The defending Division III state girls basketball champion has been disqualified from the tournament by the Ohio High School Athletic Association, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

The South Euclid Regina Royals, favorites to win their seventh state title next week, have been ousted for using an ineligble player in a sectional tournament game last month.

Regina defeated Elyria Catholic 68-45 on Wednesday in the regional semifinals, but was removed from the tourney on Thursday. Elyria Catholic will play Smithville on Saturday for the regional title.

Madison plays Versailles at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Springfield in the regional finals. The winner advances to Ironton or Oak Hill in the state semifinals at 1 p.m. March 18 at the Schottenstein Center in Columbus.

Madison-Shroder: Approximately 10:20

The Madison-Shroder boys basketball game here at UD Arena should get under way somewhere in the vicinity of 10:20 p.m. A cheerleader injury during the Taft-Bethel game caused a 45-minute delay.

Taft defeated Bethel 68-60 behind 25 points and 11 rebounds from Adolphus Washington. It was an ugly game with a lot of up-and-down, undisciplined basketball and mistakes aplenty on both sides. Bethel had 30 turnovers, Taft 19.

Taft will face the Madison-Shroder winner in the regional semifinals Wednesday at 8 p.m. at Kettering Fairmont’s Trent Arena.

Madison-Shroder: Maybe 10:00 start

Taft leads Tipp City Bethel 37-28 at halftime here at UD Arena in a Division III district boys basketball championship game. This game was delayed 45 minutes at the end of the first quarter because a Bethel cheerleader got hurt in front of her team’s bench.

All this means the Madison-Shroder game, scheduled for 9 p.m., probably won’t start until at least 10 p.m. The Taft-Bethel second half will tip off right about 9 p.m.

Madison-Shroder will be delayed

Madison’s boys basketball team will face Shroder Paideia for a Division III district championship here at the University of Dayton Arena tonight. If you’re sitting at your computer preparing for blog updates, the game will not be starting at 9 p.m. as scheduled.

We’re at the end of the first quarter in the game before Madison-Shroder, which is Taft vs. Tipp City Bethel. Taft leads 19-18, but we’re in a half-hour delay that isn’t over yet because a Bethel cheerleader went down in front of her team’s bench and is currently being looked at by medical personnel. The teams have been sent to their locker rooms and will get a short warmup period before resuming play.

I would say the Madison game won’t start until at least 9:45, likely later. I’ll keep you posted here on the blog.

It appears he’s off to a good start.

About 85 to 90 players are participating in the offseason workout program, and Haynes said that “things are going great. The kids are working hard.”

Haynes said in January that he hired all of his assistant coaches except one — a wide receivers coach.

That hiring has been put on hold as Haynes is “just trying to find the right fit,” he said.

Mason’s Castner juggling softball, football duties

Official softball practice began on Monday, March 8, for the 2010 season — the last for Mason High coach Brian Castner.

Castner was named the Comets’ new football coach back in November, thus making this softball season his final one at the helm.

“Everything is going great,” Castner said. “I am really finding out what the old saying means, ‘You are only as good as the people around you.’ Right now we are really good. I love my staff and our Mason kids.”

And it hasn’t affected his football responsibilities.

With softball practice in the afternoons, the Mason football squad is in the midst of an eight-week commitment workout schedule that runs from 5:30 to 7 a.m. every day.

Lakota West’s Hicks set new district record

Lakota West High senior guard Jordan Hicks saw his basketball career come to an end on Saturday night, March 6.

hjn010910splakotawest+(7).JPG

But not before he set a Lakota district record.

Hicks finished his career with a record 87 games played, including 81 starts. He missed only one game his entire four-year career, and that was for the Under Armour All-American football game in early January.

Hicks also holds the district record for career steals (170) as well as the West mark for steals in a game, steals in a season and steals per game in a season. Hicks is in the Lakota top ten in all five primary statistical categories (points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocked shots) — a distinction he shares with just one other player, 1992 Lakota graduate Keith Gregor.

Hicks ranks eighth on the all-time Lakota scoring list with 1,062 career points.

Here are some comments from Sams:

“(The 4-1 lead after the first period) gave me something to work with. I didn’t have to worry about him being close or me having to scramble for shots. It feels great (to win in my first match ever at state). It’s nice to get the first one out of the way. Hopefully I’m come back tomorrow and wrestle better. I don’t feel like I wrestled my best right there. I’m pretty upset with how I wrestled. I felt like I let him control the tempo.”

Joe Conrad beat Holy Name’s ERich Scheidel 3-1 in the first round of the D2 140-pound bracket, and this is what he and coach Rich Dunn had to say about it:

Joe: “It feels good to get the first one under my belt. I definitely want to stay on the championship side (of the bracket). When I got in deep I told myself, ‘I’ve got to finish this.’ I knew there was short time on the clock and I knew I had to finish it not only for me, but to get into his head and him think about being down 3-0 instead of 1-0. shot a double leg and just drove through.

RICH: “I thought it was a good mach. We came in knowing that last year we were really, really close. So we’ve been working mentally all year long on making sure we get into the match, stay into the match and control the match. He did all of those. He got the escape midway through the second and then just kept the pressure on. The kid gave us an opening there at the end, and Joe took advantage of it and got that 3-0 lead. Warriors win GWOC South title — while watching

Lebanon High School’s boys basketball team won a share of the Greater Western Ohio Conference South Division title last weekend — without breaking a sweat.

The Warriors were the beneficiaries of Xenia’s 63-54 win over Springboro on Saturday, Feb. 27. The result of that game produced a three-way tie at the top of the South Division as all three teams — Lebanon, Xenia and Springboro — finished with identical 5-3 records.

“We are very pleased and very fortunate. Thank you, Xenia,” Lebanon High boys basketball coach Pat Murphy said. “I’m really happy for our seniors. We started off, as everybody knows, 0-7, but we stayed positive as a team and kept believing. It’s a tribute to their attitude, character and work ethic that they came back and put themselves in position to meet one of our goals. We had to win three games in four days, and then we needed help. We did our part, and thank goodness Xenia did their part.”

It marked the third year in a row that a Lebanon boys basketball team has won or shared a league title, the first time that has happened in school history. The Warriors finished the regular season with a 7-13 record and open Division I tournament play at UD Arena on Wednesday, March 3 against Springfield.
