A gas tax holiday? | Living Green

Happy Earth Day!

Happy Earth Day!

Today is the 38th annual celebration of the planet we call home, and a day to step back and think about things we can do to preserve and restore our natural resources…

So that’s the official line on Earth Day, but I want to know: what do YOU think about Earth Day?

Is it a time to reflect on accomplishments?

A time to call for more action?

Or something in-between?

Send a post, let us know, then go outside and do something good for the planet.

A gas tax holiday?

I had over half a million results come up when I Googled “gas tax holiday” today. Big-name news outlets’ stories filled the entire first age (pretty rare in my experience; usually there’s at least one small interest group I’ve not heard of in that first-page mix).

Senators Hillary Clinton and John McCain are stumping on the idea on CNN as I write this.

So what do you think would happen if the 18 to 21 cents of tax dropped off each gallon for a limited time? Would it make a difference in the short term? What about the long-term impact, after the holiday ends?

I’m very curious to see what the public has to say about this one.

Again, it’s your forum. Fire away.

Well, the sense that I get from reading a variety of sources is that the idea is almost universally viewed as a political gimmick which will have no impact on the larger problem of oil dependence. The oil companies will actually make more money because it is likely that, even with the tax suspended, the price per gallon of gasoline will stay unchanged. The tax would simply take money away from infrastructure repair which is already severely underfunded as it is. I did a little figuring for myself and found that if this “holiday” was implemented for the summer it would put approximately forty dollars in my pocket. If the politicians are so hell bent on believing that an extra forty dollars in our pockets will make such a huge difference in the economy, then why don’t they just send me the forty bucks? Hey, I’ll get a partial fill-up. It’s just another “stimulus rebate”. Call it what it is-political pandering. And it’s also a dumb move politically because you promise people something and then when it happens people realize that you really haven’t given them anything at all. It’s robbing Peter to pay Paul. Weak-willed politicians using smoke and mirrors to distract us from the elephant in the room, our junkie-like dependence on finite resources. Why won’t our elected leaders do what is expected-LEAD!! Forget the gimmicks!
