Road warrior, part II | Living Green

Happy Earth Day!

Happy Earth Day!

Today is the 38th annual celebration of the planet we call home, and a day to step back and think about things we can do to preserve and restore our natural resources…

So that’s the official line on Earth Day, but I want to know: what do YOU think about Earth Day?

Is it a time to reflect on accomplishments?

A time to call for more action?

Or something in-between?

Send a post, let us know, then go outside and do something good for the planet.

Road warrior, part II

My experiment with more efficient driving (see the earlier “road warrior” post under “general green living”) has reached a conclusion. Granted, it’s about as scientific as sticking a finger up to measure wind direction, but my results do suggest there’s something to efficient driving techniques, such as shifting to high gears as soon as possible and avoiding jack-rabbit starts.

As I mentioned in the last post, I average about 250-275 miles a 7-gallon tank in my ratty old Honda Civic. I fueled up today, after consciously driving in an efficient manner since my last fill-up.

I got 283 miles out of that same 7-gallon tank. Not a quantum leap, but not bad, especially considering that it included two trips with bikes strapped to the back.

I’m going to keep playing with efficient driving to see how much mileage I can eke out of my car. Have you tried the same techniques? How do/did they work for you?

Hi Matt, so about 1% difference. How about overinflating your tires slightly? Or removing some weight from your car?

The zero got dropped - should be 10% difference
