Mmmm, yes — but water is TASTY.
Now, this is interesting… I confess that like many of the rest of us, I have always believed the old saw that drinking lots of water is really good for you, and have heard the “eight glasses a day” thing and from time to time even tried to follow it.
I will say that when I have, I’ve dropped a few pounds pretty quickly (fills you up, helps keep you hungry) but there is that whole up-several-times-at-night-to-go-to-the-bathroom thing…
Anyway, it seems the whole eight-glasses rule might not be everything we thought it was, as this story from Slate.com suggests.
What do you think? There’s a snarky tone to the story (as with everything on Slate, come to think of it), and it leaves out one key point: Drinking too much water, unlike consuming too much of most other things, certainly can’t hurt you.
Well, unless you stub you toe in the dark on the way to the bathroom at 3 AM…

Yes you can drink too much water, it’s called Water Intoxication and can lead to Hyponatremia. It’s when you aren’t replacing the electrolytes in your body that you are washing out with all the water. You literally can drown yourself. Now, having said that, it’s not common or easy to do. And it comes mostly from drinking too much at once. There have been a few deaths attributed to it, including one I can think of when a grandparent made her granddaughter drink several gallons of water as punishment. As for the story, we always hear that it’s good to do one thing, and then a few years later, someone says no it’s not and then we go back around the cycle again.
