“Lakota is a district on the brink”

I am at the Lakota Local School Board meeting, and Superintendent Mike Taylor has made another presentation about Lakota’s funding situation.

“We truly are a school district that I would consider to be on the brink of financial disaster and we will look very different when we open our doors Aug. 25 for this particular school year,” he said.

Lakota recently sent a letter outlining the effects of the $8.2 million in cuts effective at the start of this school year. The impact includes larger class sizes, reductions in transportation services, elimination of class offerings at the secondary level and fewer staff members.

How have these cuts impacted you? Have you felt them in your family? I would like to hear from you. Feel free to comment here or e-mail me.

Lindsey, I think people need to mark their calendar for the Board’s special meeting next Monday, August 16th at 4:30. I am expecting more specific details on what Mike Taylor is terming the pending “financial disaster”; this should provide more information for people to evaluate. Although there have been a number of cuts that will change business as usual, my first impression is that painting the situation as financial disaster may be a little strong. People have to spend the time to hear the details first hand because there is a lot of suspect information floating around.

I don’t understand what/why Taylor talks about “financial disaster” yet his and the board actions to recall “more then” 30 people from the spring RIF speak differently. If you are truely on the edge of financial disaster the last thing to do is to increase your operating cost by hiring 30 more people. I don’t think Lakota knows how to manage a district within a budget because they have gone to long operating above the income level they have. Time for new leadeship and management that knows how to budget and manage within budget.

Those 30 who were recalled were to replace 30 who left since the RIF list came out. No additional staff, just 30 different faces.

It’s easy to see how some confused it as unless people read the entire story - not just the headline and a paragraph or two, they’d walk away thinking Lakota is up 30 positions from the RIF. Frankly, the Journal did a poor job in conveying it. They also should have shared what the normal voluntary staff turnover numbers are on average each year for perspective. And more importantly, how much Lakota spent buying staff out, a number that’s yet been shared. Better to share it now than closer to November. http://www.journal-news.com/news/hamilton-news/superintendent-lakota-on-the-brink-of-financial-disaster-852750.html?showComments=true
