BACK TO SCHOOL!!!!
In case you haven’t noticed, Lakota students are back in school today. Traffic was definitely heavier with everyone on the road this morning. I dropped into the new East Freshman building, and students were picking up their schedules. The atmosphere was definitely charged with excitement. I am heading over to West to see the new renovations. I will be interviewing some Lakota East jazz students that made it into the state honor band, and I may just head to one of the elementary school buildings for lunch.
What kinds of back-to-school stories would you like to see? I would love to hang out at a bus stop for the first day of kindergarten? Any takers?

A grandmother’s love
I was near tears today as I interviewed as boy and his grandmother. What a precious testimony of faith, grace and perseverance! Look for the story later this week, but let me tell you a little about this family.
This grandmother’s husband died after 40 years of marriage. She was trying to raise six grandchildren on her own while working seven days a week. When she asked for help, the government took the children and placed them in foster care. While there, they were moved to home after home as cases of abuse and neglect became apparent. Finally, she was able to adopt her grandchildren after two years of constant worry.
Domique, the 18-year-old young man who is now the first of 12 grandchildren to graduate from high school, said it was his grandmother that kept him from getting in trouble and Lakota for helping him learn to succeed.
Through the specialized Wokini program through Butler Tech, he learned to block out the frustrations and emotional baggage in order to focus on school. He also learned that he can make something of himself and break the pattern of drugs and violence that had plagued his family. His grandmother practically glowed as she spoke of his accomplishments. Intermixed in the conversations were hints of the struggle, yet her focus on God’s strength has kept her going. That, and the love for her grandchildren.
This story just makes me pause. Those children were born into heartache and struggles. Those children very well could have become statistics. They were on their way to getting lost in the system. This grandmother said it was because of the hearts of educators at Lakota/Butler Tech that saved her grandson and his siblings.
