Can anything be cuter than first-graders running gleefully to neighborhood storm drains placing anti-pollution signs?
No really. It was adorable.
Creekside Elementary students told me why preventing pollution in the water supply would ultimately save sharks and fish. It would keep their school creek cleaner and clean up other bodies of water in Butler County.
I especially loved the creativity they showed when they created garbage pick-up contraptions.
I have photos and a story about the event. I also want to plug the Butler County Soil and Water Conservation District at http://www.stormwaterdistrict.com
or http://www.butlercountyohio/conservation
Check out the story here: http://www.pulsejournal.com/hp/content/oh/story/news/local/2008/05/07/pjw051508water.html

Raymond Walters College in Cincinnati is hosting what I think might be an interesting art exhibit. For all of you who saw the bodies exhibit, I think this exhibit packs a much stronger social message.
According to a press release from the college, a documentary photographer Diane Covert used X-ray and CT-scans from two of Jerusalem’s largest hosptials to explore the affects of terrorism on the civilian population.
“Inside Terrorism: The X-ray Project” will be held May 16 through May 28. The free event is at the Science and Allied Health Building (SAHB), 9555 Plainfield Road, Blue Ash. The exhibit will be accessible Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. and on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Those in the photos are civilian victims of terrorism; ordinary people going about their lives who represent a broad cross-section of humanity. The people featured in the kiosks and wall pieces represent a range of people.
Covert explains, “The idea for Inside Terrorism began to coalesce in my mind in 2002 as a personal response to terrorism and to my discomfort with the way terrorism has been justified in some circles. This is a documentary of survivors of terrorism. Much like photographer Mathew Brady documented the Civil War, people in emergency rooms today are documenting the effects of terrorism.”
Raymond Walters College opted to host the exhibit as part of the college-s 40th anniversary celebration because it fosters dialogue and thought.

I heard a parent called a local radio station to say she was providing alcohol and condoms to Lakota students at her house party. First, I can’t imagine a parent calling to confess such a thing, but what if it was true?
The West Chester Twp. police and Butler County Sheriff’s deputies tell me that parents host parties more often that we would think. My first reaction: What kind of a parent would knowingly allow their child to break the law and then enable his or her friends to do it also? My second reaction: What kind of parent would allow his or her children to attend a party where such things were happening?
To be fair, I am not yet a parent. Also, I ran with a crowd in high school that did not drink. My parents “hosted” drug and alcohol free gatherings at our home specifically because they could keep an eye on things. I belonged to a drug and alcohol prevention group at my school and actively worked to promote safety.
That was in my home. However, some people I talked to about this issue said their parents felt it was better to let them drink at home than to go out drinking. Some parents would rather have their children having protected sex in a safe environment than out somewhere else on prom night. Some parents figured their children needed to get the partying out of their system in high school so they wouldn’t go nuts in college.
What are your thoughts? The law is clear. The police will prosecute parents who host as well as the underage drinkers. While their is no law against minors having sex, perhaps they would have clearer minds about their actions if they weren’t drinking.
I know people feel passionately about this topic, and I would love to get your thoughts. Obviously, my stance is against such gatherings. Bring on the counter arguments.

I just love this Web site http://www.howstuffworks.com.
Click here to discover how just about everything works. I like this example. Ever wonder what people are posting to Wikipedia? Now you can find out.
“How the Wikipedia Scanner Works
Someone at the CIA is editing Wikipedia entries about lightsabers. How do we know? The Wikipedia Scanner. It was created to catch politicians, corporations and government agencies trying to change their Wikipedia entries anonymously.”
