Fairmont vs. Northmont (live updates)

KETTERING — About 20 minutes before game time and fans are still filing into Chester Roush Stadium. A full house is expected for what is basically the GWOC Central championship game between the 7-1 (3-0) Northmont Thunderbolts and 7-1 (3-0) Fairmont Firebirds.

Check back often and refresh for live updates during tonight’s game.

Northmont took the opening kickoff and finished a 7-play, 69-yard drive with a little bit of a break. Mark Mays ran to near the goal line and fumbled, but lineman Brian BenVenuto recovered in the end zone for a touchdown. The extra point was missed, so the Thunderbolts lead 6-0 with 8:55 left in the first quarter.

After a Fairmont punt, Northmont again marched down the field for a score. This time, Kevin Ringer ran in from 2 yards out to cap a 53-yard drive. The Joe Inkrott kick was good to make it 13-0 with 1:02 left in the first.

Fairmont finally got going offensively, but stalled out at Northmont’s 31. But the Firebirds converted a fourth-and-10 on a Marc Pedro-to-Brendon Cunningham pass. Northmont was called for pass interference, setting up the Firebirds at the 9. After a 1-yard gain and a dropped TD catch, Jamaal Everett scored on an 8-yard pass to make it 13-7 with 1:19 before halftime. That capped a 17-play, 95-yard drive. At the half, it’s 13-7 Northmont.

The teams have exchanged turnovers and drive-killing plays. After three, it’s still Northmont 13, Fairmont 7.

The Firebirds nearly had a go-ahead touchdown but Pedro’s pass was too tall for Everett. Fairmont made a field goal but it was called back by a holding penalty. Pedro’s fourth-down pass was knocked down by C.J. Barnett, so Northmont takes over with 5:50 left.

The Thunderbolts ran a lot of clock and hit Inkrott hit a 33-yard field goal with 2:03 left for a 16-7 lead.

After a good kick return, Fairmont couldn’t convert a first down. Northmont takes a few knees and the Thunderbolts celebrate a 16-7 win and GWOC Central championship.

With this win! YOu would think that Northmont by sweeping the big 3 in conference they would get the respect in the polls. Strenth of games played out of conference mattered I thought? I guess favorites still plays a big role or where you start out in the beginning. Hmmm!!!!!
