The one thing people might be over looking is the cost of this service.
If you run the numbers and discover that parents can feed their kids for pennies a meal. But we give it over to the schools that feed the same kids for dollars a meal… then we complain why the PROPERTY TAXES are so high and the school are so far over budget.
If we cut the program and give the millions of dollars back to the family who can feed the kids for pennies EVERYONE WINS!!! Gov’t is never efficient!!
The breakfast program is one of the best ideas yet. Lots of parents are busy in the morning and so are the kids. One more positive is that even if the kids can not make it in to the school in time for the hot breakfast they may take a sack breakfast to class to eat. This project has brought up many test scores… that we all know the city schools are pushing for an increase in scores of. It has also helped the children understand more fully what IS healthy to eat and what is not. It’s great!!!
Your right no one I know is on assistance… BECAUSE I HELP ANYONE I KNOW THAT IS IN NEED. We rely on family. We help friends who are in need… And many that are strangers. We keep each other accountable for our actions and for how we raise our kids. We tell each other to STOP IT if we do something irresponsible and when we hit hard times we help each other. If we see a stranger truly in need we give until it hurts.
We don’t rely on government to do what we are suppose to do ourselves!!
what is the problem with you guys? you act like you have not had to struggle for anything. because if you did . maybe you would be alittle less apt to be so judgemental. I can bet you have a family member that recieves some type of assistance, do you think that way about them? hepling kids succeed despite situations is the focus. as a young person, I’ll be paying for your medical bills, when you retire. everyone will depend on the system at a cerain time in their life,

The breakfast program is one of the few government programs that makes sense. As former President Bill Clinton said, “A hungry child cannot learn.” Giving a child a ‘leg up’ when it comes to education is the only way to go. The child should not be punished for the parent’s irresponsibility.
How can you people be so negative? For those of you who want to rag on people who are on assitance, you should put yourself in their shoes. I am a single mother, full time student, and I also work. I still recieve benefits. If it wasnt for the government programs you are so quick to blame, I wouldn’t be as far as I am. They actually try to help people. I couldn’t help the situation that caused me to be on assistance. Not everyone can. I appreciate the help from the schools.
You are right… Breakfast doesn’t “happen”. Nothing just happens. But if you are telling me that parents can only be expected to feed… YES FEED their children one meal a day (dinner)… then maybe the problem is something much bigger than we are focusing on.
If you are not able to feed your children because you have to pay other bills… then I suggest you start by canceling the internet service that allows you to read this website. Then I suggest you cancel cable as well.
I’ve read the same line of thought through several of the comments…that it is the parent’s responsibility to provide breakfast for their children and I agree. However, I think that if anyone truly believes that breakfast happens for every child then they are being very naive for this is not a perfect world. This school should be applauded for recognizing that something so simple as breakfast could be turned into a positive tool for educating their children.
I CAN’T BELIEVE ALL THE NEGATIVE COMMENTS! YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELVES! THERE ARE SO MANY OUTRAGEOUS THINGS THE GOVMT SPENDS OUR TAX $ ON. THIS IS NOT ONE OF THEM. THIS IS TO FEED INNOCENT CHILDREN!! I AM A HARD WORKING SINGLE MOTHER WHO DOES NOT RECEIVE ANY PUBLIC ASSISTANCE AND I AM GRATEFUL FOR THE PROGRAM. MY CHILDREN EAT BREAKFAST AT SCHOOL OFTEN. IT HELPS SAVE AT LEAST $20 WEEKLY. THAT HELPS PAY BILLS TO TAKE CARE OF MY FAMILY. HOW IS THAT SUCH A BAD THING??
I wonder why they aren’t eating breakfast food and a glass of milk at home (or something simple like that).
The national politicians are trying to create a socialist state - Springfild and Clark County government and school systems are trying to beat them to the punch.
(Continued from below)
When Medicare/Medicaid began giving away health care and the govt. required hospitals to provide care for those who couldn’t - or wouldn’t - pay, the cost of health care for everyone else increased exponentially. As the old saying goes, “there is no such thing as a free lunch” (or breakfast). Someone has to pay - and the cost here is not in money, but in the expectation that if we don’t act responsibly, government will provide for us. This is a bad thing to teach kids.
Unfortunately, every well-intentioned government program that gives what people should be providing for temselves (or their children) has unintended - and usually bad - consequences. When government programs began giving money to single mothers, the number of single parent families increased dramatically, and the nuclear black family in our cities was destroyed. (continued)
OF COURSE THE PROGRAM WORKS… responsibly feeding children always works!!!
But we are not teaching responsibility here… we are teaching dependence on others instead of independence.
If we clothed them, fed them, and provided tutors, housing and bedding their grades would be fantastic!!!! We called that “raising children” when I was little and parents did that… NOT THE GOVERNMENT.
We are creating a welfare state. What is “Good” is not always “Best”
Believe me I don’t want to punish the children… of course I don’t want to teach them to live on welfare either.
I am all for punishing parents who refuse to take care of their children after we give them food stamps, WIC and other free food.
We have removed every natural consequence for being irresponsible in society today. You will be using your tax dollars to house and feed these kids for years to come. We are teaching them to live on welfare.
As an educator I can tell you these programs work. Children are more attentive and ready to learn. I would much rather see my taxes go for a program like this than some stupid war in Iraq.
…Stop punishing children who don’t have parents who are unable or unwilling to take care of them. I am more than happy for the government to use my taxes to make sure children are not hungry. I would much rather tax money go to school breakfast than some of the other things for which taxes are used.
When has it become my responsibility to feed other people’s children breakfast and lunch? We provide food stamps, WIC and other sources of help to any family that needs it. What are they using that help on? Can’t parents make a PB&J sandwich for their kids anymore? Or fry and egg and make some toast? Leave it to the schools to measure success by increases in the number students they can TEACH to rely on the government to feed them. Stop rewarding parents who don’t feed their own kids!!
This is just one more way to create people who are dependent on the government for everything. Schools ought to teach kids that THEY are responsible for their lives, not the government. PARENTS ought to provide breakfast for their children - it is NOT the government’s job to parent our kids. (Obviously since the supervisor of food and nutrition admits that mountain dew and honey buns are “option”, they’re not doing a very good job either.)
I FEEL THIS IS A GREAT PROGRAM, MY GRANDSON, IS THE CHILD IN THE PHOTO, AND I AM GRATEFUL TO THIS PROGRAM FOR OFFERING THE BEST KINDS OF NOURISHMENT FOR HIM.
THANK YOU SIMON KENTON FOR BEING SO CONCERNED WITH OUR CHILDRENS WELFARE.
A GRATEFUL GRANDMOTHER.
I think it’s great. Anything to improve the learning potential of our future is a good thing. Also, unfortunately alot of these kids do not have the opportunity to eat breakfast. Let’s continue to take care of our kids.
I think it’s nice that kids can get breakfast because this is the most important meal of the day. Some parents don’t see that there children eat breakfast at home so having the opportunity to eat breakfast at school is great.

What happens do these kids on the weekend? Do they go hungry or does the school open the doors and fire up the grill?

If your children eat “free” breakfast and lunch at school then they are receiving public assistance.
I am sorry that your children’s father has decided to not help you feed your children. That is shameful of him.
We should use tax dollars to punish fathers who abandon their responsibilities.
