Bengals are on the clock & other draft analysis
BOTH LINES ARE HIGH PRIORITIES
The Cincinnati Bengals are on the clock in the first round of the 2008 NFL draft.
In my eyes, it’s an either/or proposition with the No. 9 overall pick on April 26.
Offensive line OR defensive line. To me, it’s that simple.
IF Southern California defensive tackle Sedrick Ellis is available, THEN the Bengals should waste no time in snapping him up.
If Ellis is off the board — and I’m convinced he will be gone to the New England Patriots at No. 7 — then the Bengals have no other choice than to take an offensive tackle. The choice will pay off in the long run.
With Michigan OT Jake Long headed to the St. Louis Rams at No. 2, my order of preference for the Bengals goes like this:
Ryan Clady, OT, Boise State
Jeff Otah, OT, Pittsburgh
Chris Williams, OT, Vanderbilt
Why an OT in Round 1?
Because Levi Jones’ knees and Willie Anderson’s knees can’t be trusted to last an entire 16-game season.
QUICK HITTERS
—-The Bengals are thin at DE with Frostee Rucker backing up starters Robert Geathers and Antwan Odom, so there’s a chance they could draft Florida’s Derrick Harvey at No. 9. I still believe the bigger needs are at OT and DT.
—-If Virginia DE Chris Long goes No. 1 overall to Miami, it’s a statement that the Dolphins need immediate help and aren’t willing to sink big money into a QB who needs time to develop.
—-I see Boston College QB Matt Ryan falling. If the Atlanta Falcons (No. 3) and Baltimore Ravens (No. 8) don’t grab him, he could tumble to the bottom of the first round.
—-I can’t see Ohio State DE/OLB Vernon Gholston getting past the New York Jets at No. 6.
—-I believe the Oakland Raiders will snag Arkansas TB Darren McFadden at No. 4.
—-The Kansas City Chiefs’ pick at No. 5 will go a long way in shaping this year’s first round. Because the Chiefs need help everywhere, it’s tough to get a good feel on which direction they’ll go.
READERS CHECK IN:
From Carl in Dayton, OH: “I realize I’m probably the only one who feels this way, but I think far too much emphasis is placed on defense and not enough on offense. If I were a general manager, I’d concentrate more on building a dominating offense. As an old high school coach once told me: ‘The best defense is a great offense. If you don’t let the other team have the ball, you don’t have to worry about defending against them.’ Paul Brown did that (adequate defense, great offense) with the original Cleveland Browns in the old All-America Football Conference and won the title every year.”
—-The Chickster’s Response: Nobody doesn’t love a high-powered offense, but championships are won with defense.
From Ed in Dayton, OH: “Bengals.com has Cincinnati taking Derrick Harvey at No. 9. I’m saying you cannot take Harvey or Gholston at No. 9.
—-The Chickster’s Response: Harvey is an outstanding player. At 6-foot-5 and 271 pounds, he’s a pure 4-3 defensive end. But the fact that the Bengals just signed Antwan Odom in free agency leads me to believe they’ll go in a different direction. Oh, they’ll draft a DE among their 10 picks, I just don’t think it’ll happen in Round 1. Keep this in mind: Odom was a second-round pick by the Titans in 2004, the same year the Bengals drafted Geathers in the fourth round.

Ellis going to the Pats would really sting, but what is draft day for the Bengals without a little salt in the wounds? So much for “Cheaters never prosper.”By 21

Chick, Here’s what I see shaping up with the Bengals in the 2008 Draft. Here’s what I think will be the likely first 9 selections of the first round. Miami - they need everything but I think they will take a player that will pay dividends for year in Jake Long. St Louis - they don’t use a 3-4 defense alignment so I think they will opt for DE Chris Long in order to strengthen the rush. Atlanta - They need a QB to replace Vick but I think they can’t afford to pass up a lock in Glenn Dorsey. Oakland - Against better judgment Oakland again will draft erratically and take RB Darren McFadden. Kansas City - I going to go out on a limb here and say that the New York Giants will trade up with KC and take Vernon Gholston. I see this as a real possibility considering that the Giants have a couple of LB positions to fill. If this doesn’t happen I see KC taking QB Brian Brohm. N Y J – If the Giants do make the trade then I see the Jets taking RB Jonathan Stewart or if the Giants don’t trade up they will take Gholston. N. E. – Since New England lost 2 starters at CB I see them working real hard to strengthen that position. So in that case I see them taking either Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie who’s stock has really risen or Leodis McKelvin. Although the could I don’t think that NE will go after Sedric Ellis because of the need at CB plus they already have youth at DT. Baltimore - I see the Ravens being a real spoiler here because I think they will move to prevent Cincinnati from getting a top notch DT. Therefore I see them taking Sedric Ellis if he is still on the board. If not on the board I think that they will draft QB Brian Brohm or Matt Ryan. Both of these are typical pocket passers and I think that is what and will provide insurance to them at QB. In the event that neither of those players are available I think that they will go after OT Ryan Clady to shore up the offensive line. Cincinnati – Since both Dorsey and Ellis will be gone by the time that Cincy picks I see them taking either Rashard Mendenhall at RB or Derrick Harvey at DE. Harvey would appear to be a good pick for them but he and Mendenhall are really not the best player on the board at the number 9. With this scenario I see that Cincy really needs to work out a trade with either St. Louis or Atlanta in order to move up in the draft so that they can get Dorsey. Preferably I think Cincy should work out a trade with St. Louis for the number 2 position so that way they can get either Dorsey if he’s not the first pick or Chris Long who is bona-fide DE. Note if it comes to them taking Chris Long I feel that it will work out because they will be able to move Geathers back to a rover LB position plus they can always pick up a DT during a later round. I see them swapping first round positions with St Louis plus throwing in either their 3rd round pick or perhaps a veteran player instead of the pick. After that I think that Cincy should focus on WR James Hardy or OLB Shawn Crable or WR Devin Thomas or MLB Phillip Wheeler MLB with their 2nd pick. I’m thinking Hardy will add the depth for the loss of Chris Henry but OLB Crable will add further depth at the LB position. For their regular 3rd pick I feel they should take either WR Andre Caldwell or DT Frank Okam depending on whether they trade up on the first round. I really like Okam if they can get him. He has plenty of bulk and in a 4-3 set should really solidify the defensive line. Of course if they do trade up it’s possible that this pick will be lost via the trade. For their 3rd round compensatory pick I think they should focus on with DT Red Bryant or WR Jordy Nelson or OG Roy Schuening, or OLB Beau Bell. WR Nelson appears to be a burner and could be a kickoff specialist. For their 4th round pick I see RB Tashard Choice or TE John Carlson or OC Steve Justice as possible picks. I RB sounds appealing based on last years running game but I also see a need to pick up a backup Center. For their 5th round pick I see WR Will Franklin who has good size or WR Kennan Burton does also or CB Tyvon Branch who can give depth at CB or DE Kendell Langford which has good size at the position or OG Jordan Grimes who can provide OL backup.By Mike

Chickster, this is the second time you’ve said it and the second time I disagree. We have too much money committed to the OT position in Willie, Levi and Stacy. I think you are also overlooking the fact that we have Andrew Whitworth whose natural position is tackle (correct me if I’m wrong). Why grab a tackle in the first round when we have much more pressing needs and we can pick up a tackle OR guard (in which case, we’d move Whitworth to tackle if Jones/Willie/Stacy aren’t available). We have too many blatant needs to draft an OT in the first round. Way too many. To me, LB, DT, WR, RB and maybe even Center and DE are bigger needs. I list RB above because Rudi is done. All this talk of him returning to form sounds just like Shaun Alexander prior to last year. When these guys are done they are done. His mileage is too high.By Frank

That’s an interesting bit of draft analysis Davidincincinnati, but would you mind expanding on your key points when you get the chance?
